Book Review: Tegan’s Blood by L.H. Cosway (Bloody Delicious)

Hands down, this is my favourite book so far this year.  Tegan’s voice grabbed me from the first page and I couldn’t stop reading.

This novel is told in the present tense, something I usually dislike, but somehow it worked for me in Tegan’s Blood.  When we first meet her, Tegan is an emotional mess.  Her boyfriend’s suicide a couple of months ago has rendered her a prisoner in her own apartment.  She is afraid to go outside, drinks too much, and is generally not looking after her physical or emotional wellbeing.  Her good friend Nicky determines that enough is enough, and forces her out on a girls’ night to the club Crimson, a Goth-type vampire bar.  The vampire persona is not just a theme; the place is run by Ethan Cristescu “a beautiful bastard” in Tegan’s words, and a powerful vamp of Romanian heritage, naturally. He quickly sets his sights on her, and not unlike Sookie Stackhouse from the Charlaine Harris books, Tegan suddenly finds herself immersed in the deadly world of vampire politics.

The setting is Tribane, a city divided by the Hawthorne River; I’m guessing this is a fictional place located in England given the references to Tesco and pounds.  I loved Tegan’s dark sense of humour and the major flirting and innuendos going on between her and Ethan.  Tegan’s down-to-earth nature and normality reeled me in straight away, and I sped through the novel.  She’s quite self-deprecating and unaware of what a cool woman she is. She’s also brazen in her own way, like how she slyly nabs the job at the occult shop, Indigo.  I could easily relate to Tegan and laughed at how similar our Saturday nights are: queuing to get into a club, having the girls behind her bitch when her friends skip the queue, fumbling in her bag to find her passport for the bouncers, ordering an unclassy alcopop like Bacardi Breezer at the bar… That’s my basic Saturday night!  If all that wasn’t enough to make me love this book, Buffy gets an entire chapter named after her. What Would Buffy do?

And of course, no paranormal romance read would be worth much without a hot male lead.  Ethan is strong and commanding, patient but authoritative, and he meets his match in Tegan.  There’s also wicked imagery running through this novel.  The images of the house rising out of the ground on Ridley Island, and the carnival lit up at night with all the rides going but no one on them, were both vivid and disturbing.  I did notice a few slight errors in the text, but they didn’t take away from the beauty of this book which I cannot recommend enough.                                                                                                                Tegan’s Blood is the first novel of 2012 that I have absolutely loved.  Bring on part two: Tegan’s Return. *****

Reviews of My Book: Night Sighs

I received two lovely reviews of my ebook Night Sighs recently, that I hope people won’t mind me sharing in a blog post. I self-published this collection of 5 paranormal short stories last November, and always love to get feedback.

Urban Fantasy Reviews                                                                                                                    To start off I want to make sure I mention this is a compilation of five short stories. I myself am not a huge fan of short stories because I feel like I don’t get a long enough time to really get to know the characters, or connect with them. One of my exceptions to this rule is when there is a compilation of short stories that take place in various worlds I already know, for example when you read an anthology that includes stories of Mercy Thompson’s world or Sookie Stackhouse’s. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this compilation of short stories.

From the first short story you are introduced to Tristan and Alex, Tristan who is a vampire and Alex who is just an ordinary human. You can tell that the two of them love each other but there is certainly more going on than meets the eyes. And the first story has a way of pulling at your heart strings in a way that is surprising and pleasant especially since it was only about 5 pages long.

The next story has to do with Tristan and Alex meeting up with each other again after a long absence. For me I think this was my least favorite of all the stories. I found the interaction between the two of them to be cold and almost in a way semi-vengeful and not in a good way. I really felt bad for Alex within this story.

Then they offer you a bit of a glimpse into a couple in love on vacation, and hey where does a vampire want to go to visit anyways? Why Egypt of course! I mean seriously with all the history and magical mojo going on with the pharaohs why wouldn’t a vampire want to hang out in a tomb. Hey death is right up their alley right? I found this story to be funny and more about these two people just being together.

In story number four you find Tristan in some serious hot water. On the plus side it turns out Tristan has some friends as well as Alex who are willing to put themselves on the line to help Tristan out of this new found jam he had found himself in. I like this story because it has all kinds of elements in it, you see the love between Alex and Tristan as well as friendship and some humor.

The fifth story is really the first time you see Tristan fully understand how much he loves Alex and how much he is willing to do for her. This story I would say is the most suspenseful of the bunch and highly enjoyable. This was the one story I wanted to read quickly from beginning to end just to find out what was going to happen next.

Overall, I have to say I enjoyed all of the stories. I do have to mention they all have a lot of sex in them so this is not for the faint of heart or for those who blush easily. I would say this would be right up the alley of people who like paranormal romance or erotica. I can honestly say I would like for the author to make their story into a full length novel, because it would for sure be one I would read.

Reading the Paranormal                                                                                                    Comprised of 5 short stories revolving around Tristan, rock star and vampire, and Alex, his human-turned-vampire love. Each story is surprisingly complex and shows the depth of their emotions for one another. The only story that I didn’t really see as progressing their overall arc was the one where they went to Egypt. I still found it enjoyable, I just didn’t get the same vibe off of it as the others. I loved Tristan’s reaction when Alex is attacked and the realization that he could have so lost her so quickly.

A very fast read, it ends up being quite satisfying while leaving you wanting to know more about these two star-crossed lovers.
