Mini Book Reviews: The Nature of Cruelty plus more…

Feel like some contemporary romance or a post-apocalyptic horror thriller? Read on.

natureThe Nature of Cruelty by L.H. Cosway.

Another page turner by L.H. Cosway. I think I  may have mentioned this author on my blog more than a dozen times by now, but she’s an excellent writer!

Moving on. I despised Robert for a good deal of the book and even when I finished, I didn’t quite like him. He treated Lana terribly when she was a teenager and emotional scars cut deep. I don’t think wounds from childhood and taunts from bullies are ever really forgotten, and I’m not sure Lana and Robert belong together. Despite my lack of enthusiasm when it came to caring if these two got a HEA or not, I couldn’t put this book down as is always the norm whenever I read a book by Cosway. It helped that the sex scenes were very sexy. Check it out on Amazon and Goodreads.

PS: For any Irish people reading this, does the guy on the cover remind you of Bressie?

twelfthTwelfth Sun by Mae Clair

I loved trying to figure out the clues with Elijah and Reagan. At times, this book felt like a wickedly enjoyable old school murder mystery, despite nothing so sinister going on. I kept thinking of the board game Cluedo (or Clue I think it’s called in America).

The descriptions of the beach and boardwalk brought me right back to the summer I spent time in Rehoboth Beach. I could almost taste the hotdogs and fries, hear the seagulls screeching right above my head and smell the Atlantic. The romance between Reagan and Elijah was refreshing. I adored Elijah’s flirtatious nature. A fun, summery read. Check it out on Amazon & Goodreads.

PS: The cover is gorgeous. It exudes a summery warmth. And if you find yourself enjoying Twelfth Sun (which I have no doubt you will), try Mae’s debut novel, Weathering Rock, another great read.

deadDead of Eve by Pam Godwin

Good story and writing, but I found the scenes of rape, torture, mutilation and abuse difficult to read through. Evie was a strong and admirable woman. I thought it was kind of funny how every good man she came across was drop dead gorgeous and that three men were happy to share her between them, all sleeping in the same bed because she needs skin to skin contact before she can sleep, but I guess, if you’re the last woman on earth, you pretty much get to set out your terms when it comes to the bedroom department.
Side note: I was skitting laughing when the Irish character, Roark, says “feck aaf”. Check it out on Amazon & Goodreads.

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare Books 1 to 5.

ashes

Phew. I need to catch my breath after reading all five books within a couple of weeks. I couldn’t put them down. I reviewed City of Bones already, but enjoyed the next four books just as much. I am so desperate to read the next and final story that I’m surviving on reading snippets and teasers from the author’s website at the moment. City of Heavenly Fire doesn’t come out until May 2014!! This book series has action, romance, the supernatural, plenty of fight scenes, and resilient and tough characters. It’s also funny and heartbreaking.

I laughed and cried reading The Mortal Instruments. Simon has to be my favourite character. He’s just so honest, endearing, normal, a good friend, a once regular guy forced into a darker life. He’s a hero, and he cracked me up several times. Reading How To Come Out to Your Parents – lol. I’ll have to make do with re-reading the first 5 books until the final novel is published. Check out the series on Goodreads.

Lisa Ann Brown

Lisa-Ann-Brown-266x300Lisa Ann has been involved with storytelling and entertainment, in one form or another, her entire life. Beginning her creative journey as both a writer and an actor, Lisa Ann spent many years immersing herself in innumerable books, countless theatre productions and earning a degree in Musical Theatre. Shortly after college, she attended the Vancouver Film School to learn the finer points of screenwriting. This study culminated in the writing of a few feature length scripts and an overwhelmingly potent desire to move from Canada to Hollywood.

Once ensconced in East Hollywood however, creative inspiration lured Lisa Ann away from screenwriting and returned her to her original writing intentions: to be a novelist. In three months, Lisa Ann had completed her first novel, I Raid, and there has been no cessation of her novel writing ever since. Moving back to Canada, she spent many years working as a talent agent in Vancouver before retiring from the film industry to focus on writing full-time. Lisa Ann derives great personal satisfaction by delivering her characters through the twisting arcs and unexpected tribulations of their imaginary lives. She strives to keep her readers on edge while enjoying the suspense and surprise of their literary journey. She resides in picturesque Vancouver, BC, Canada where she is happily nestled in between the Pacific Ocean and the Coastal Mountain range.
