Dark Relic: Book 1 in the Vampires’ Curse series

Private Investigator Libby Fox is not having the best day, and the knock on her door long after office hours is not what she needs, until she sees who’s outside.  Adam Ryder, a slightly pale, handsome client with dark violet eyes turns out to be a nice surprise, and it helps that he doesn’t blink at the exorbitant fee she pulls from thin air.  Of course the reader realises he is a vampire long before the protagonist does, but that doesn’t matter.  We enjoy every bit of the time it takes Libby to discover the paranormal world.

I liked Libby straight away.  She’s smart, independent and somewhat sarcastic.  As a self-employed woman you’d expect her to be ballsy and determined, and she doesn’t disappoint in the way she handles herself.  She eats microwave meals, has a cat called Sherlock, is living the single life, all of which I can relate to!  I guess I see a little something of myself in Libby, or at least I’d like to think so.

Adam charges her with finding a missing 16 year old but Libby soon learns this case is bigger than a missing person.  Adam is really trying to protect an important ancient artefact from falling into the hands of the wrong people. Libby gets ahead of herself in one scene and tries to be a hero and I was left shaking my head at her.  She had been so smart up until that point!  As a Buffy addict, I loved seeing the reference to Spike.  At the heart of this  story is Libby’s attraction to Adam.  The desire goes both ways but she’s uncertain about pursuing a relationship with a vampire.

Overall this book was great fun and a quick read. ****

Secrets of the Wolf: Book 2 in the Vampires’ Curse series by Lauralynn Elliott

The follow up to Dark Relic continues the teasing and playful tone of the series and I sped through this novella as quickly as the first one.  It opens with Libby on a date with the confident vampire Adam with the startling violet eyes.  She’s falling for him, but she has big issues with his need for a blood donor.

Libby is not used to having handsome, rich men strolling through her office door, so she is delighted when another gorgeous guy enters her life, this time in the form of a 6 foot 4 werewolf named Blake. I couldn’t help but picture Alcide from True Blood as Blake. He hires Libby to find an important book that’s been stolen from him.  We learn a little more about Adam’s history and his former donors throughout this story.  He wants Libby to become his only donor but she has an aversion to being bitten, making a relationship between them seem impossible.

I thought Libby would learn her lesson about not going into dangerous situations by herself, but apparently not.  She marches right into the den of a known human hunting werewolf. Silly girl!  I was shaking my head again at her here.  The detective outings fill the time in between scenes between Libby and the hot paranormal men.  I realised in this book that she’s not a very good detective and needs to be rescued by her own clients quite a bit, twice in this story (lol).  I’m not sure why paranormal men of such power and wealth would hire her in the first place, although Adam seems to have learned his lesson after the first book and hires her for research and nothing else he tells her, not that she listens.

My advice is to make yourself a hot chocolate with extra marshmallows and settle in for a delicious, lighthearted read.  These novellas are perfect to fit around a busy schedule and provide a lovely antidote to a hard day’s work.

My verdict: Enjoyable, paranormal, romantic fiction and the covers are awesome. ****
