I love that moment. Are you listening girls, women, people everywhere? No matter what’s taken from you, how bad things get, as long as You are still You, things can get better. Thank you Buffy, and the Buffy universe for making me a stronger woman.
Now for the Music
The Bronze became a character itself. In Sunnydale’s only club where teens seemed to hang out every night of the week, we got to hear some great music. I first caught Buffy on TV when I was 14 years old. Fate must have been on my side. I remember coming home from the cinema (I can’t remember what the film was) and flicking through the channels. I didn’t know at the time, but I happened to pause about ten minutes in to the very first episode of Buffy, “Welcome to the Hellmouth”. I sat transfixed for the next thirty minutes. Vampires, a hellmouth, a misfit group of friends, a blond chick who kicked ass!!! I diligently plonked my ass down in front of the TV at 19.55 sharp every Saturday night. Buffy aired at 8pm on Sky One back then.
Here are a few favourite songs from Sunnydale.
“Virgin State of Mind” by K’s Choice – one of my favourites. Moody and atmospheric.
“Full of Grace” – Sarah McLachlan. Haunting, sad, beautiful.
“Stupid Thing” – Nickel. Catchy song. Plays when Spike is watching Buffy in the Bronze, the first time he sees her.
“Sugar Water” – Cibo Matto. From When She Was Bad. Unusual sound. Buffy takes poor Xander onto the dancefloor for a sexy dance and manages to hurt her two best friends and her vampire not-yet-boyfriend all at the same time.
“Rest in Peace” – From the musical episode. Oh how I adore Spike and James Marsters.

Oh god, you make me want to go back and watch the entire series again! We have it on DVD, so I just might spend my weekend with Buffy. That was such a great show. I saw the movie first and wasn’t keen on watching the series, but then my fabulous husband convinced me it wasn’t anything like the movie. Thank goodness! That music is awesome. Yeah, I’m breaking out the DVDs today…
I hope you get around to watching some of it this weekend. I recently watched the entire seven seasons again. Can you believe the last episode aired more than 10 years ago?
Yeah, the movie isn’t great. I still can’t imagine how Joss Whedon convinced a TV network to let him start a series.
I’m fangirling so much at this post. 😀 I love the quote you’ve picked, but ohh, how did you narrow it down to just one?! I would have an absolute nightmare trying to pick.
Buffy will forever hold a special place in my heart, I have all the box-sets and will continue to re-watch them again and again. Similarly to you, it was pretty much a complete fluke that I came across it. I originally came in near the very end of season five and immediately became transfixed! I still bawl my eyes out at all the right moments.
Love your song choices, I particularly love Full of Grace and Rest in Peace, ohh and I love Sugar Water too….ohh I just can’t pick!!! Although there would be a few others I would have to add, Hepburn I quit, Walk Through the Fire and my all time favourite Bif Naked, Lucky!
Ohh, and I especially loved the Stupid Thing video, Spike will always be number one for me. 😉
Delighted that you’re fangirling Becky, ha ha. That particular scene has always stayed with me. She’s down to nothing but herself and her own inner strength, and that’s enough.
I prefer the earlier seasons to the others. I think the show lost something when they left high school and the library behind.

Hmm that’s interesting. I know what you mean in certain respects, yet I wasn’t very keen on the Angel drama in season two. Loved season 3, 5 and 7, they’re my favourites I think, but it’s ohh so hard to choose! 🙂
Gawd! Full Of Grace had me in tears…and left a need to pull out my old box sets and re-watch. Loved that show. Loved Buffy. Loved Angel. Loved Faith (even as a baddie). Dru creeped me out and made me laugh. Anya was totally misunderstood and perfect for my boy Xander. Willow…in my mind she should have always been with her wolf boy. I enjoyed every season of that show. Miss it.
That song is beautiful and the video reminds us how much Buffy and co all went through. I loved Tara and Willow together, but yeah, part of me would have like to see her with Oz to the end.

I love the quote too. I used to watch Angel at 5 or 6 in the morning, but now it’s on even earlier, so I don’t see it as much. I love him. I have seen Buffy on Angel, so I am really surprised I’ve never watched her show. I’ll try to rectify that ASAP. ^_^ I love the post. Thanks for sharing and have a fantastic weekend.

Buffy is great to watch when you’re happy, sad, tired, anytime really. I especially love the first few seasons with the core group: Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles. Their banter always makes me smile, more than a decade later.
Yeah, music post, for some reason those are my favourite posts of yours. And no, I still haven’t watched Buffy yet, although, I finally got my son to see how brilliant Firefly is.
Glad you enjoy my music posts. They’re fun to put together. Shame on you, Hubbard. Go and buy the boxset, you won’t regret it. Maybe you can convince your son to sit down and watch the goings-on in Sunnydale, too.
I love Buffy. The Gentlemen has to be my favourite episode, they’re so scary.
I have the soundtrack to the musical episode on my ipod, really love Spike’s song too- and not just because it’s Spike!
That’s one of the best episodes. Those guys have to be in the top 3 scariest monsters ever to feature on Buffy. Death from the season 2 episode when Buffy was in hospital should be in that list too.

Love this post! My favourite songs are ‘Strong’ in episode ‘Never Kill a boy on the first date’, ‘Temptation Waits’ by Garbage, ‘Nothing but You’ in the episode Beer Bad when she’s drunk, ‘It doesn’t matter’ by Alison Krauss & Union station in Season 2, ‘Got the Love’ in Bewitched bothered and bewildered when Xander walks down corridor with all girls under a love spell haha, ‘I Only have eyes for you’ by the flamingos in season2 episode of same name (nearly went mental when Angel temporarily ‘came back’), and FINALLY, the instrumental music Close your eyes from season 2 finale–heartbreaking…..so upset, can’t type anymore……..I could go on forever……………
I can’t think of “Nothing but You” so I’ll have to pop over to YouTube to have a listen. I love “It Doesn’t Matter” – one of my favourites definitely. Got the love, got the love… ha ha, I’m picturing Xander walking down the hall trying to hide. And yes, “I Only Have Eyes for You” – there is something creepy about the song. shanshala…. I could go on forever too Laura. 🙂
PS Buffy rocked Seasons 1-4 after that, I hate to admit I lose the feeling,:( except for badass Willow Season 6 finale! 🙂
I went back and watched the entire series, finished a few weeks ago and I have to say Season 5 was actually quite good, season 6 was utterly depressing. Joss Whedon really messed up a lot of things that year. Among all the gloom and despair, we had Anya and Xander engaged only to have Xander leave her at the altar. Absolutely awful. I found that season boring. The Double Meat Palace episode? One of the worst episodes in all 7 seasons. Then season 7 started off well, until the Potentials arrived and shacked up at Buffy’s house. I still don’t get how they defeated The First in the finale? Can you enlighten me? Thanks, Laura.
