Film Review: Heathers (Deliciously Dark and Funny)

“Another F**king Heather”

Okay, not a film that would fall under the supernatural genre, but it does have some elements of horror. And it’s a bloody good movie. It falls into my top 20 favourite films.

***

heathersI can’t remember how I first came across this black comedy. Most likely I watched Heathers on the sly in a cousins’ house when I was a kid without my parents’ knowledge. Good times.

Winona Ryder (Veronica) belongs to the most popular clique at school along with three other girls, all named Heather. Lead Heather likes to bully the less fortunate students and Veronica goes along with it even if her heart isn’t in it. New boy at school, the cool and enigmatic J.D. (Christian Slater), fancies Veronica, but isn’t too keen on the people she hangs with.

They begin a courtship that involves passion, murder and staged suicides. Ah – young love. As the body count starts to rise, Veronica becomes increasingly concerned. Maybe J.D. isn’t the hot, cool guy she thought he was. Maybe he’s just a psycho who’s going to kill her when she no longer feels like playing his weird games.

I love the teenage speak in Heathers, which I think inspired some of the dialogue in Buffy. “What is your damage?” and  “Jealous Much?” are just a couple of the gems I used to enjoy saying in an American accent back in my teen days. I think Cordelia Chase (from Buffy) channelled Lead Heather a lot.

Heathers is fun and deliciously wicked, twisted in the most entertaining way.  Christian Slater and Winona Ryder are at their best here. For backup, they have Shannon Doherty, who is suitably bitchy. Heathers laughs in the face of Mean Girls. The 80’s movie is funny, daring, boasts a great cast, and the chemistry between Slater and Ryder sizzles. *****

Rent it tonight if you haven’t seen it in a while.

“Teenage suicide; don’t do it!” (Can’t get the song out of my head)

Agh, one of my all-time favorites as well. I just recently bought the digital version to replace my VCR tape. I used to know every line by heart and find myself randomly quoting the movie. Still. It was our generation’s version of Mean Girls, only way more twisted.

I think one of my sisters gave me the DVD a few years back. Giving up the video tapes of some of my favourite films was painful, but we don’t have a working VCR in the house. Way more twisted than Mean Girls. Mean Girls is soft and fuzzy compared to Heathers.

Oooh, I’ve never heard of this, it looks liked a gem! And you know whenever you compare something with Buffy I’m instantly going to be interested. 😛

  3. Mae Clair says:

This is one of those movies I never got around to seeing. Not sure why as I always liked the sound of it and liked the cast. Sounds like a cool flashback for a retro night!

    • Emma says:

I think Winona Ryder rocked the late 80’s and early 90s. Heathers, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands Dracula, Reality Bites..
      Definitely a retro night.

Haven’t seen it, but glad you liked it so much. ^_^

  5. Haven’t seen this one, but it’s something I shall rectify immediately! *hollering for my son this second!* lol Poor child.

    Sounds super,Emma! Have a glorious weekend. 🙂

  6. I love this movie. Back when Wynona Ryder was a major crush of mine.

  7. Debra Kristi says:

OMG! One of my favorites from back in the day. So funny to see it on your blog now. When this school year started out my eight-year-old daughter began hanging out with three other girls. When they would saunter out of class they would have an air about them, I couldn’t help but liken then to Heathers. My husband wasn’t crazy about my comparison, but the way things turned out I may not have been too far off. :O

  8. Jess Witkins says:

Oh yah, this is a classic. Lots of great lines and songs. We watched this one a couple months ago. Anything with Winona Ryder in it, I watched. And since Bob Hoskins just passed away, I need to rewatch Mermaids. Have you seen that one? That’s another great film.

  9. Emma says:

Jess, I thought of Mermaids the second I heard he passed away. Definitely a great movie.

Haha I’ve always wanted to watch this! Have to put it on the download list immediately – I don’t think my local video store will have it in stock.

  11. fuonlyknew says:

Winona and Christian are some fav actors of mine. I’ll have to watch this one Emma!

  12. I love this movie… the original “mean girls.” 🙂

  13. I saw this one on someone’s recommendation. I think it was Tiffany’s. *waves to her up above*. It was kind of sick, but I enjoyed it. 🙂

    • Emma says:

It does sound like a movie Tiffany would recommend. Heathers is a bit sick, but I’m kind of twisted anyway, so of course I loved it. 😉
