Vikings
The moody opening credits give me chills.
And it’s filmed in Ireland, so check it out if you’d like to see some lovely scenery. Alexander Skarsgard’s (Eric Northman from True Blood) brother plays Floki. What surprised me while watching Vikings is the position of women in their society. They had a lot more power and freedom than anywhere else in the world at the time. Lagertha, the renowned shieldmaiden is admirable. She’s a formidable leader and warrior.

Revolution
I came late to this show, tuning in now and again to an episode of this post-apocalyptic programme. I think it kept me going when I was missing The Walking Dead. The most intriguing relationship for me was Miles Matheson and Sebastian (Bass) Monroe‘s. Of course just as I was getting into this show, I found out it has been cancelled. 😦

Shameless (US Version)
I watched some of the first series of the UK Version years and years ago. I can’t remember why I didn’t stick with it but when I found out about the US remake, I thought I’d give it a go. Shameless is hilarious, disturbing and heartbreaking at times.

Scandal
One of my favourite new shows. I’m a couple of years late coming to the party but Kerry Washington rocks as Olivia Pope and I enjoy the rest of her team also. It’s probably the show my friends, sisters and I discuss the most these days. The president is played by Tony Goldwyn who was Patrick Swayze’s best friend and the bad dude in Ghost. Remember him?

Interesting premise. Almost a century after a nuclear disaster made Earth uninhabitable, the residents of the Ark, a space station that orbits the planet, find themselves running out of air. They send 100 teenage criminals to the ground to see if they can survive. I love post-apocalyptic dramas. I wasn’t expecting much from this show – it’s on the CW and has a set of typically good-looking “teens” and insta-love going on, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised. It’s a lot more violent, gritty and graphic than I would have expected. So far, so enjoyable.

Game of Thrones
I’m almost up-to-date with season 4. Wow. Epic. I didn’t think I was much of a fantasy person. While I loved The Lord of the Rings movies, I can’t say I’ve ventured into reading fantasy books, but after watching Game of Thrones, I need to give this genre a proper go. And Ser Jorah Mormant played by the sexy Iain Glen is always a treat.

Hi Karen. I love The Big Bang Theory – probably catch an episode every day. The old ones are repeated all the time.
Gah! You make me want to give Vikings and GoT another try. Darn you! I couldn’t do all the violence, and with both of those shows, I didn’t find anyone I truly liked. For me, I need someone to root for. Someone who’s inherently good, even if they start out a little bad. Especially GoT, it was hard to do. And, having read up to book three, I pretty much knew not to fall in love with anyone because they could die the next book. Curse that GRRM!
So weird about The 100… I could swear I read on one of my loops a writer friend was putting the finishing touches on a story that sounds exactly like that show. What a bizarre coincidence!
It’s hard for me to commit to a series for the very reason you’re sad about Revolution. They get cancelled. I started watching Once Upon a Time, then worried that it would get cancelled and stopped. Also, I had a hard time falling in love with any of the characters and the Evil Queen was just too darn evil and always won, but that’s another story. I might go back and watch the entire series once it’s out on blu-ray. Not sure. But for now, I’ll stick with my Big Bang Theory, Castle, Rizzoli & Isles, and other fluff shows that don’t scare the pants off me. Like Vikings. They are so brutal! Eesh. 🙂
Hey, Tameri. Great to hear from you. Do give them another go. Do what I do at the violent parts – squint your eyes until it passes. I know what you mean about needing someone to root for. In Game of Thrones, it would be Arya Stark.
Don’t tell your friend about the 100. 🙂 There are no original stories left anyway, only original ways of telling them. Isn’t that what we’re told these days?
My blood boils the way TV shows are cancelled without any resolution to the storyline. Surely the people in charge can tell the writers and producers and directors, “Sorry, we’re cancelling you. Write a finale that shows respect for the loyal reviewers.” Once Upon a Time is a show I have yet to watch, but Mae Clair has recommended it also. Fluffy light shows are always good. I never get tired of watching Sheldon.
I’ve tried some of these, but couldn’t get into them. I think I’m just not into TV anymore, because I can’t even finish Supernatural (which was my favorite). I started watching Breaking Bad from the beginning again while I’m working out, and that’s pretty much all I watch anymore. But I do want to give Game of Thrones a try!
Not into TV!! – Noooo. Jen, you’re killing me. I’m with you on Supernatural though. I’m struggling to keep watching season 9, and I love those boys. I haven’t seen Breaking Bad. My sister’s started watching it from the beginning so I might borrow her boxset after.
I only started watching Game of Thrones recently. I got fed up of everyone talking about it and having nothing to contribute to the conversation. It’s good. Give it a go.
I’ve heard a lot f good things about Vikings so i’m gonna give it a go. I’m from Ireland so between Vikings and Game of Thrones i’m gonna be sick of see home!
I’ve just started watching Hannibal and its pretty good. Also the end of season 2 of Arrow was amazing!
Hi Mikey, fellow Irish person. 🙂 I live in Cork City so I can appreciate the gorgeous scenery in Vikings and Game of Thrones. I’m hearing good things about Hannibal, definitely on my to-watch list.
Game of Thrones is CRAMAZING!!!! And parts of it are filmed in Ireland too. Pretty much any forest scene. Hannibal is artistically beautiful that built quite nicely to a suspenseful season’s ending. And The Blacklist was also cramazing.
I’ll have to give Vikings a try.

I’ve only caught a few eps of Vikings, but love what I’ve seen. I’d really like to give Game of Thrones a spin too but am worried about all the time it will take catching up. I agree with Tameri’s comment, that I hate to commit to a show because they usually get cancelled. Right now I am waiting for Sleepy Hollow to come back and I just gave Penny Dreadful a try but that was pretty mediocre. As for Once Upon a Time, I’m addicted. So many changes in the way the characters behave in the later seasons, especially Evil Queen, Regina. She and Rumpelstiltskin are my favorites!
Really? Oh man! See, now I have to catch up to OUAT when it comes out on blu-ray. I was hoping they’d let the characters evolve. I loved Rumpelstiltskin the most. He and Snow.
Re Game of Thrones – the seasons are short, Mae. 10 episodes. You could catch up over the summer.
Yeah, cancelling shows and letting down fans by not giving resolution has become very typical over the past 10/15 years. I saw the first couple of episodes of Sleepy Hollow but didn’t stick with it. There was so much choice on TV when it started, I kinda let it slip through, but I did enjoy what I saw, so it’s one I’ll have to go back to. Penny Dreadful – I’ve seen a trailer but not an episode. I know you’re addicted to Once Upon A Time. 😉
If I had to pick a favorite right now, it would be Grimm. I didn’t like the main character, Nick, at first because he was kind of boring. But he’s really grown, and I love the bizarre story lines.
Is Grimm scary? I saw a trailer a couple of years back, but didn’t take much notice.
It’s not scary to me, although it can be kind of gory at times. It might scare some people. There are all these fairy tale creatures as well as some we’ve never heard of. It’s kind of dark but fun at the same time. I love it.
I’m also a TV junkie… because TV is the new cinema in my eyes. Some of the shows these days are incredible. My faves recently: GOT’s (Excellent story, characters and performances, if a little ‘extreme’ in places), TWD (one day this will end and I don’t think I will get over it), True Detective (praying there’s another series), Mad Men (ongoing vintage genius), and a load of other’s I cannot flipping recall the titles of (but there are witches in two of them) 🙂 X

TV is the new cinema. Look at all the big Hollywood stars like Kevin Spacey and Matthew McConaughey doing TV shows now. TWD is a favourite. The season is so short though, and I detest the long breaks between the first and second half of each season. I haven’t caught Mad Men yet. There’s just so much choice. Yay, witches.
I am a TV addict too. I watch a lot of crime shows and comedies. From Criminal Minds to Big Bang Theory – Person of Interest to Survivor. And many, many more. Have a great weekend, Emma.

Cheers! There have been a couple of episodes that surprised me with their ‘savagery”, I think that would be an appropriate description. I love action, blood and guts. LOL I can see why it isn’t for some people. That’s what makes TV so great. There are lot of things out there for all of us individuals. Whether you want murder, a visit to Alaska or the southern swamps, some giggles or fear. All hail the tube. ^_^
wow Emma just seen the Vikings clip you have put on , I have a tingling in my skin oh boy… I promised my self no more tv programmes for a while. As I am driving my hubby nuts he is now into The originals plus a few other programmes I have saved up. You do realise this is your fault, as I have the tv backed up on catch ups. I am not taking the blame for this one I hope the tingling skin is worth it.
Well Emma I double checked the tv paper to the tv system that have, my excitement fell fairly quickly as I don’t get the History Channel so I will have to wait a while which will work out as I can catch up with the abundant amount I already have to watch…

I’ve become A Big Bang Theory junkie. I just love that show and laugh all the way through it. Missing Walking Dead like mad. I need to check out Vikings and The 100. They sound good.
I keep missing the latest series of The Big Bang Theory. The re-runs from the very first episode are on so many channels every single day that I never know when a New ep is on. I have a feeling you’ll like Vikings, Laura. The Walking Dead season seems too short!
I remember Scandal, that was a good show! I loved the first half of season one of Revolution. I was sure it was going to be a new favourite but after that I felt it went really downhill. LOVE Game of Thrones, I’m addicted to my fantasy worlds. 🙂 Vikings sounds interesting, I’ve not come across that one yet I might have to check it out! I’m totally addicted to Game of Thrones too. I hope they at least tell us whether Tyrion lives or dies before the end of this season cuz that’d be one hell of a cliffhanger!
